Timely Volunteer --Mary Ludwig Hayes, like many Revolutionary War women, followed her husband into battle. She carried pitchers of water from a nearby well to cool the men firing a canon at the Battle of Monmouth. When William (John) Hayes collapsed, Molly took his position for the remainder of the fight, won by the Americans. Thus, she earned the nickname Molly Pitcher.
