Ethan Allen at Ticonderoga--When the American Revolution began, Ethan Allen's Green Mountain Boys, a Vermont militia, planned to capture Fort Ticonderoga, the main British base in upper New York.  Assisted by Benedict Arnold's men, Allen's militia crossed Lake George & marched silently to the fort. The gate was open & the surprised British offered no resistance.  Henry Knox transported the cannon & supplies in the depths of winter to Boston, where Washington ousted the British. Allen, captured later, was imprisoned in England until being exchanged for a British officer in 1788.
